Breed History

The Australian Cattle Dog has a rich and rugged heritage rooted in the vast outback of Australia. Developed in the early 1800s, this breed was specifically created to meet the demands of Australian cattlemen who needed a tough, intelligent, and tireless dog to herd cattle over long distances and rough terrain.

To achieve this, early breeders crossed drover dogs with native Dingoes, later incorporating breeds like the Scottish Highland Collie and Dalmation to refine both working ability and temperament. The result was a resilient, highly trainable, and fiercely loyal dog with unmatched stamina and an instinctive drive to herd.

Recognized officially as a distinct breed in the early 20th century, the Australian Cattle Dog — also known as the Blue Heeler and Queensland Heeler — has become a symbol of Australian grit and determination. Today, they continue to excel not only as working dogs on farms and ranches but also in dog sports and as beloved companions.

Planned Upcoming Breedings

We are currently accepting applications for our upcoming planned litter of Australian Cattle Dog puppies. At Wildcard Cattle Dogs, we take great pride in thoughtfully pairing our sires and dams to ensure health, temperament, and performance capabilities of our puppies.   • Poppy just certified in September in the first level of Search and Rescue. We are working towards the next level and cadaver training as well. She also is training with the Frenzyed Flyers Flyball Team, did several practice runs at a tournament in the fall and will hopefully be running tournaments in the spring. I would also like to get her doing some Fast Cats this spring as well. Considering some herding training as well as she is great around the farm. She has the best drive and most fun personality. She is super focused in training, easy to train and very handler focused. We couldn’t love her more.

  • Cricket has been a blast to train. She is super handler focused and loves learning new things. We have done numerous obedience classes and she has learned a lot of tricks as well. We tried out Dock Diving and will likely get back into that during the warmer months. I'm also excited to start her in agility. She just passed her test for her Canine Good Citizen title and her Novice Trick title. We are almost ready to take the intermediate trick title test too.
